FPU stands for floating point unit, a small chip built into some computers. Sometimes referred to as a math coprocessor or a math chip, an FPU can calculate complex mathematical problems and various graphic tasks much faster than the "general purpose" CPU (central processing unit) found in all computers. It's called a floating point unit
because its speed really shows when calculating equations involving
numbers having decimal portions, such as 67.9345x 0.00345.
